One day, as my younger brother and I were traversing on yet another of our almost daily bike rides, a thought struck me … as sure as if I’d hit a big rock in the road! My brother and I were … friends! Even close ones, you might say! I’m not sure quite how it happened.
When we were younger, we got along well and then as we got older, the normal sibling fights occurred … several times a day. We, or I at least, would wake up with great plans for the day, but then my brother would do something very-y-y irksome (or so I thought). I would get upset and before I knew it, the day that was just about over had been completely ruined by petty arguments and was not enjoyable in the least!
Around this time, I began praying earnestly for a close friend. Being the only young woman in our church, it often becomes lonely and a deep desire of my heart has been to have a close “sister” to share with. As of yet, God has had a different plan!
Because of there not being any other young people, my brother and I did everything together instead of heading off with our different groups. Somehow, someway, the Lord worked and a transformation took place … we began enjoying the things we did together! We began sharing and talking with each other like we hadn’t before! Instead of doing things with each other because there was no one else to do things with, we liked those times we spent together doing whatever captured our attention on a certain day! It took me awhile to realize it, but I have a friend I live with daily! (And of course, an even closer friend … the One who is with me always!)
I won’t lie to you … our relationship isn’t “storybook style.“ Although things have changed, it certainly does not mean that everything is magically perfect! Being three years younger than me, my brother sometimes likes to annoy his big sister and yes, we still have those sibling spats … but not nearly as often as we used to! I know many times I am in the wrong and I must daily seek the Lord’s help! I thank God for the friend He has given me in my sibling!
He can help you also in your relationships with all your siblings! He has given you these precious, few and fleeting years together in your parent’s home before you all go on the life’s journey God has called you to take! Be sure to appreciate these times together and make the most of them!
