My name is Rachel and I live in Florida. I am sixteen years old.
I like to grow vegetables. I’ve tried time and time again to grow anything down here, but it is very hard to grow vegetables in Florida. Your soil has to be built up very well because there is nothing but sand down here! My desire is to accomplish growing a vegetable garden in Florida!
I also love to sew. I started sewing about two years ago. My sisters and I couldn’t find anything very modest in the stores. We like wearing skirts and dresses, and so I decided to start sewing. I started out making this funny skirt that wasn’t wearable. Now I can sew quilts, sheets, pillow cases, aprons, shirts for men, bonnets, dresses, and skirts. I would like to find out how to make men’s pants. Since I have accomplished all that, I think I’ll find out how to make pants! I can’t really find any modest patterns so I just make up and draw my own. God has really helped me fulfill my desire to sew for my family.
I also love to bake bread and make butter for my family. Making bar soap and laundry soap is fun too. I have to make sure that I have enough bar soap and I don’t run out, because I use it to hand-wash handmade dresses and skirts for me and my sisters.
Canning is one of my favorite things to do. With a family of seven (three girls and two boys), food does not always go that far. So when I get a hold of a lot of vegetables or fruit, I’ll can them, and that helps with the food bill.
I really want to live on a farm and be self sufficient. I would like to have my own cows, goats, chickens, horses, and ducks. And actually, I would love to not have a car and drive in a horse and buggy, and have no electricity… but that might not happen!
I love serving my family, and I encourage any other young ladies to do the same!
