This story isn’t really about Betrothing/Courtship, but it is a story about the power of the Lord. A story about how He can take two people that are an ocean apart and bring them together.

About a year ago while at the nursing home in our little town, I had the opportunity to meet an elderly lady by the name of Kay Sacco. One day while visiting with her, she told me the story of how she met her “prince charming” over 60 years ago. This year I had the opportunity to video tape an interview with her about her love story. I have transcribed it below in hopes that it may bless the rest of you.

I was a young girl living in New York City, never dated a boy, and never kissed a boy, when I met the love of my life. We were a clique of girls, all the same type, none of us had dated; we had strict parents who’d come from Europe.

Well we decided to do something once a month; get together and do something.

For instance: let’s go see the Statue of Liberty; we’d never really seen it from the inside. Another month we said, let’s go to Central Park, It’s supposed to be one of the most beautiful parks. This went on, and every place we went we carried a camera. One of the girls (named Tillie) decided to take the pic- tures and send them to her brother who was in the service of the army, because the war was going on. So she did this and her brother showed his army brothers “the girls from Brooklyn”.

Well this young man from Saint Paul, Minnesota looked at my face. He wanted to write to me. So to make a long story short, I gave my friend per- mission that this young man

could write to me. He started to write to me friendly let- ters, wanting to know, what did I do, what did I like, what didn’t I like? And this went on; I can’t quite remember how long. It was until the war ended, I know that. Here he is from Minnesota and guess where the boat landed that he was coming back to American on? Brooklyn, New York. Well us girls got real excited be- cause we wanted to see and meet him.

The day that he landed in Brooklyn by boat, they took the soldiers and sent them to Camp Dicks, New Jer- sey. It’s an army base. So unknown to me, he got permission from his boss to come and visit me. Well I wasn’t home the night he came. Because it was Sunday night, I didn’t have to work. I was at a birthday party. Well he met my mother and my mother told him where I was. So they went looking for me. They had to take a taxi. When they got there, I had just left the party. They [the people at the party] said “She’s on her way home.” So they went back home.

I got home; my father was there, but not my mother. I said “Where’s Momma?”

Guess what he said to me? “She’s out with Joe.” That’s his name, the love of my life, Joe. Can you imagine when that door bell rang how excited I got? My mother had the pleasure of introducing me to him. That’s how I first met him.

So come summer time, I get a weeks vacation with pay. He writes to me from Minnesota. “Can’t you come and visit Saint Paul while you’ve got your vacation?”

I said, “Sure. Why not?” So I went and met his whole family; sister, brothers, father, and mother. His sister gave up her bedroom, so I could be the guest of honor. Well, he took me all over, and introduced me to friends, showed me things, and places. By the time I had to go back home, I was engaged to be married. He loved me and I loved him.

Well, we were married April the 20th, 1947. We had a happy marriage, he was very good to me. So good he spoiled me. He took me to Rome, Italy on a vacation. Took me to Niagara Falls, took me to places I’d never dreamed of seeing.

So we were married and had a nice wedding, and he still is the love of my life, though he’s been gone now eight years. I miss him. Gave birth to four children, two boys and two girls. I never dreamed I could meet somebody like that, who turned out to be perfect. His parents were so happy. You see they were from Europe – from Italy. And to think that their son took a trip to New York city to meet an Italian girl, and bring her home to Mama and Papa… They liked that.

For now my life will go on remembering him until the day I die, and then I can be with him.

So don’t settle for anybody. God has someone meant for you special. So you never know who’s around the corner when you least expect it, your prince Charming will come.
