To be a lady means more than outward appearances. It encompasses the total woman or girl. Outward appearances can be just that….outward. But real ladylikeness comes from within. My husband’s cousin’s wife was the most ladylike woman I have ever known. She had a quiet humility about her that made you want to be around her. She looked to her household and family and was never influenced by the things of the world to ever once betray her love for them. She was a wonderful hostess, and she made you feel that your presence in her home was of the utmost importance. She listened to you intently. Her attention was focused on you. She was never distracted, rushed, absent-minded or overwrought. When you entered her home, you could feel the peace there that made it a haven for anyone who either lived or visited there. It didn’t matter what time of the day you went to visit, she was always well-dressed (comfortably) and fresh-faced. Her home was clean and orderly, and it was a pleasure to visit with her and her family She had the quiet spirit spoken of in scripture. Early on, I knew I wanted those same attributes. When her husband was speaking, she never interrupted, and she listened to him. When she spoke, it was always in a soft tone. I don’t remember ever hearing her raise her voice, even when disciplining her children. She was the heart of her family and she showed it in every way. Her family was the only earthly thing of impor- tance to her, and it showed in the contentment of her household. I have prayed to become like her. I know she was well- pleasing to her heavenly Father.
