Book Review And Giveaway: Before You Meet Prince Charming

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

I had heard about this book for quite some time and was always interested in reading it, but for some reason I never made it happen! When my sister gave me the book on my last birthday, I was delighted and enjoyed it immensely. “Before You Meet Prince Charming” is subtitled “A Guide To Radiant Purity” and tackles the subject of how to remain emotionally pure before marriage.

Although I’ve read several “emotional purity handbooks”, this is one that I can whole-heartedly recommend to girls of all ages. As one mother wrote; “It did not compromise one’s purity while reading about purity”. The author (Sarah Mally) discusses a number of topics, including the dangers of the modern dating system, setting standards and sticking to them, how to control your thoughts and guard your heart, having right relationships with young men, surrendering dreams and desires to the much bigger and better plan of the Almighty and living a joy-filled, contented lifestyle while “waiting”.

Interwoven throughout the book is a story of a princess in a castle and her struggles with these issues that we girls face. There are testimonies from other young women as well as suggested assignments at the end of each chapter. This book was an enjoyable read that offered wonderful advice and encouragement … and I heartily recommend it for all unmarried young ladies! It would also be a great book for a mother and daughter to read together.

If you would like a chance to win a copy of “Before You Meet Prince Charming”, here is what you do!

Book Review And Giveaway: The Beauty Of Modesty

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

There are some books that I wish I could give to every girl I know! I love to read, but there are some books that have really spoken to me. Since the goal of Shining Stars is to encourage ladies in femininity and biblical womanhood, I would like to begin hosting giveaways of books that do just that. My hope is to do one giveaway a month, but that will depend on the available finances.

When I saw this book advertised, I read a few reviews on it and thought that it sounded interesting. It seemed like the type of book that I would want to feature on this site, so I decided to order it and see what it had to say. I began to read … and wow! I was not disappointed!

The Beauty of Modesty was authored by a pastor and his wife – David and Diane Vaughan. The subtitle expresses the purpose of this book: Cultivating Virtue In The Face Of A Vulgar Culture. As a young women who has grown up in a family where modesty has always been a focal point, this book was not a shocker. I did not come away with earth-shattering revelations! What I did gain, was a new appreciation for modesty and how it affects me and those around me. Let me try to review the aspects of this book that I really appreciated:

The authors of this book do not come across as judgmental or condemning. They are straight-forward with the facts … not beating around the bush, but speaking the truth in love.

This book is very informative on the history of the immodesty in our society, how it has affected our lifestyles and infiltrated the body of Messiah. In many ways, we have become desensitized to the immodesty that surrounds us, to the point that so many people who are considered born-again believers dress in a manner that is no different from the rest of the world.

While much of the focus is on the heart and attitude, the authors explain the importance of the outward appearance as well. It is common for people to say, “Modesty is all about the heart” or “It doesn’t really matter how I dress, as long as my heart is right”. This mindset is rooted in Gnosticism and is not scriptural. The Heavenly Father created our bodies … they were purchased by the blood of the Messiah … His Spirit resides in them … and the way that we cover them matters to Him – as can be seen in Genesis 3:21. The garments that Adam and Eve made to cover themselves were not appropriate in YHWH’s eyes.

They do very little defining of what types and styles of clothing are immodest. You cannot use this book as a guideline for how long a skirt must be, or how low a cut is “too low”. Rather they address the various aspects of immodesty, including ostentation, androgyny, sensuality and association. They also discuss the importance of being modest in our words and actions … modesty is not just about the way that we cover our bodies, but also the way that we conduct ourselves.

This book does not just address modesty, but other aspects of living a godly lifestyle that is pleasing to the Father. The Beauty of Modesty encourages women to see their bodies as beautiful, because they are created in the image of the perfect God … it gives one a desire to dress modestly out of respect and kindness for their own body and those around them … it stresses the importance of not causing others to lust and sin … and most importantly it exhorts women to stand against the secular culture that tries to pervade every aspect of our lives, patterning their lives on biblical instructions, presenting their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is their reasonable service, not conforming to this world: but being transformed by the renewing of their mind, that they may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

I heartily recommend it for any woman who desires to serve the Heavenly Father with all that she has!

(Note: I would recommend that a mother or older sister go through this book before a young girl reads it. As the authors explain the history of cultural immodesty and how it affects us, it may be too descriptive for young girls to read.)

Book Review And Giveaway: Feminine By Design

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

The whole purpose of Shining Stars is to encourage women to practice biblical womanhood. There is not a large selection of scripture concerning what biblical womanhood looks like and there are many different opinions on what those few scriptures allow and do not allow.

In Feminine By Design, Scott Brown addresses twelve pillars of biblical womanhood. Using scripture, he outlines the biblical role model that each woman should aspire to be. In the preface, Mr. Brown writes:

“Scripture does indeed place distinctive limitations on the roles of women and men. But, when it is God doing the limiting it is always a limitation that sets you free from the bondage of unworkable principles. It sets you free to be what you were created to be.”

Some of the aspects that are discussed include: An Image Bearer … A Helpmeet … A Woman Not A Man … A Demonstration Of Unfading Beauty … and more! I highly recommend this book for girls of all ages, especially those who are striving for the scriptural standard of what it means to be a godly woman.

If you do not win this copy, you can purchase one through NCFIC or Vision Forum or you might be able to find it on eBay and amazon :)

Book Review And Giveaway: So Much More

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

There are some books that I wish I could give to every girl I know! I love to read, but there are some books that have really spoken to me. Since the goal of Shining Stars is to encourage ladies in femininity and biblical womanhood, I would like to begin hosting giveaways of books that do just that. My hope is to do one giveaway a month, but that will depend on the available finances.

The first book for review and giveaway is So Much More by Anna Sophia and Elizabeth Botkin. I had heard some really good things about this book, and my mother gave it to me for my birthday several years ago. I began to read, and WOW! I was excited! This book explained why I was doing what I was doing, and even more. Before reading So Much More, I had an understanding of the importance of biblical womanhood, and an idea of what it should look like, but this book was eye-opening.

The Botkin sisters portray the role of women throughout the Bible, and how they lived their lives, while interweaving stories and testimonies from young ladies of today who are doing their best to follow these role models. They also did an excellent job of explaining the Marxist mindset behind the feminist movement, and how it has infiltrated our culture and is prevalent even among Christians.

This book is hardcover and contains 352 pages. While I may not agree with everything that was stated, I feel that So Much More is a must-read for all young ladies. I appreciate that while the Botkins sisters addressed what could be a very controversial issue, they maintained a non-judgmental attitude. While they are straight-forward in sharing what they believe to be right, they do not condemn those who feel differently.

I will be giving away one copy of So Much More … if you would like to join, please leave a comment on this post (entry rules are below). Multiple family members are allowed to enter, and international readers are also welcome to join! If you do not win the book, and would like to read it, I recommend finding it on www.amazon.com. There are other websites that sell it, but Amazon seems to be the cheapest :)
